To protect and serve
The Scranton Volunteer Fire Company (SVFC) answers an average of approximately 1,300 alarms annually, a number that has seen a steady increase over the last five years. Our district covers about 5.18 square miles of land, in addition to approximately 11 miles of the New York State Thruway (I-90).
Geographically, our district is at the center of the town, which gives us a very high population, building, and traffic density, along with a high call volume. We protect a diverse area that includes single and multiple dwellings, government buildings, public assembly spaces, shopping plazas, light industry, and “big box” commercial buildings.
Our district is divided nearly in half by the I-90. East of the Thruway, closer to Station 1, are older single-family homes, apartment complexes, and higher-risk residential buildings. West of the Thruway, near Station 2, we have newer single-family homes, apartment complexes, and larger commercial occupancies. Our district, which has 12.96 road miles (including residential, county, and state roads), is home to 14,163 residents, according to the 2020 census.
